More Than Just a Trip: A Volunteer Carer’s Insight into St George Community Getaways

3 March 2025

Thinking about booking an overnight trip but not sure what to expect? Our volunteer carer, Paul Whitwell, has provided a detailed account of what you can look forward to:

A Day in the Life of Our Volunteer Carer, Paul Whitwell

Prior to joining St George Community, Paul spent 35 years as a paramedic, dedicating his career to helping others in times of need. Now, he brings the same care and dedication to his role, ensuring passengers feel safe, comfortable, and entertained throughout their journey.

Paul described the preparation that goes into organising St George Community overnight trips: “Travelling with us is more than just getting from A to B – it’s about making every trip an experience to remember. I start my day early, ensuring everything is in order and guests are greeted with a warm smile. Throughout the journey, I balance smooth individualised care with entertaining commentary. And I make sure everyone is comfortable. Whether it’s sharing local trivia, making impromptu scenic stops, or joining in the laughter with guests, they are truly the heart of the trip.”

Day 1: The Journey Begins

7:00 AM – Pick-Up Whirlpool

The adventure kicks off as my fellow driver, Mark, picks me up early, and we begin the pick-up whirlpool. It takes about 1.5 hours to collect all thirteen travellers before we can even think of heading south. Thankfully, everyone is ready well ahead of their scheduled time, waiting cheerfully on the footpath as we arrive.

Once aboard, passengers introduce themselves with a friendly “Good morning, my name is…” making everyone feel at ease as they select their seats. Mark and I go over the itinerary, and with that, we set off towards our first stop.

Morning Highlights

Bulli Tops – Coffee & Comfort Stop

The weather is overcast with light rain, but the atmosphere on the bus is bright and lively with chatter. We attempt some 1950s trivia – met with mixed enthusiasm – until Mars Bars become the prize for correct answers!

Southern Gateway Visitors Centre – Stunning Views

Our coffee and muffin break at the Southern Gateway rewards us with breathtaking views over Wollongong and the South Coast. The rain clears, revealing a picture-perfect morning.

Scenic Stops & Coastal Views

Billy’s Lookout (North of Gerringong)

We pause to admire Werri Beach and the lush green pastures of the region’s dairy farms.

Shoalhaven Heads & Coolangatta Winery

A beautiful drive takes us past Shoalhaven Heads and Coolangatta Winery – so impressive that we’re already planning a separate trip there soon!

Nowra – Quick Stretch Stop

We take a short break in Nowra (a name of Aboriginal origin meaning ‘Black Cockatoo’) before pressing on towards Mollymook.

Lunch & Wildlife Encounters

Durras – Kangaroo Spotting

A slight detour takes us through Durras, where we spot local kangaroos out for a morning feed. Unfortunately, one look at Mark sends them hopping for the hills! Sam gives his best kangaroo impersonation, but we all agree he should stick to driving buses.

Mollymook Golf Club – Delicious Lunch

A tempting menu awaits us at the local golf club, offering something for everyone to enjoy.

Evening Comfort & Camaraderie

Lincoln Downs – Our Accommodation

Just a kilometre north of Batemans Bay, Lincoln Downs provides high-quality, spacious accommodation. A few lucky travellers even score spa baths, while others relax with a cuppa on the lawn or take a dip in the pool. There’s time for a siesta before our evening outing.

Catalina Golf Club – Dinner & Friendships

We arrive at Catalina Golf Club in Batemans Bay and are welcomed with two long tables where everyone, regardless of which bus they started on, mixes, and mingles. By now, new friendships are well and truly formed, and laughter fills the room as we share stories from the day’s adventures.

This is just a glimpse of what you can expect on an overnight trip with St George Community. A perfect mix of adventure, relaxation, and good company! Ready to book your next getaway? In April we head to down to a different part of the NSW South Coast, and in May we will visit Bathurst and Dubbo.
