Gold Rush, Wine Tasting & Star Gazing: A Memorable Mudgee Getaway

27 March 2025

There’s a reason the Mudgee Region continues to top travel lists: rolling hills, award-winning food and wine, and charming townships steeped in history. Our recent three-day escape proved just how much this corner of New South Wales has to offer.

The trip began with a relaxed drive through the mountains, breaking for morning tea in Bilpin and a hearty lunch in Lithgow. By the afternoon, the group arrived at Mudgee Honey Haven, a local favourite for tastings, honey products, and a peaceful country setting – and the perfect first photo stop.

Our base for the trip, Cudgegong Valley Motel, offered a classic country welcome, complete with tranquil views over the river and gardens. The group had time to unwind before heading to dinner at The Woolpack Hotel, a Mudgee institution serving up pub classics in a warm setting.

Day two began with breakfast in town before heading to the historic gold rush village of Gulgong. Here, the group explored the Gulgong Gold Experience and the Holtermann Museum, both offering fascinating insights into the town’s 19th-century roots. A walk through Gulgong’s preserved streetscapes felt like stepping back in time — with plenty of opportunities for snapshots.

Later that evening, after dinner at Club Mudgee, we were treated to one of the trip highlights: a stargazing session at the Mudgee Observatory. With the late summer skies putting on a show, it was a magical way to end the day.

The final morning included a visit to Robert Stein Winery, where the group enjoyed a wine tasting and a look through the vintage Motorcycle Museum. After a scenic drive to Rylstone, we stopped for a memorable lunch at the iconic 29 Nine 99 Yum Cha in the tea rooms, before making our way home via the Hydro Majestic in the Blue Mountains.

St George Community Carer Maria summed it up perfectly after chatting with clients on the way home:
“The resounding feedback was that everything was good! A few called out the observatory as a highlight, others mentioned the Holtermann Museum — and the winery was a clear favourite for our dedicated in-office volunteer Else. All in all, I believe (and hope!) everyone had a great time. It really was a bit of everything for everyone.”

This is just a glimpse of what you can expect on an overnight trip with St George Community — a perfect mix of adventure, relaxation, and good company!
