Volunteering is not only a fulfilling experience but also a powerful way to give back to the community. It is known to reduce stress levels and promote a positive mindset. Beyond the personal benefits, volunteering fosters social connections, a sense of belonging, and resilience, helping to combat feelings of depression and anxiety.
Recently, we had the pleasure of attending the St George Mini Volunteer Expo, where we shared information about our volunteering opportunities and met many individuals eager to make a difference. This event, hosted by St George Community, 3Bridges, Advanced Diversity Services, the Aged and Community Care Providers Association, and Sydney Community Forum, brought together a variety of volunteer organisations. The expo was a fantastic opportunity for attendees to explore different ways to contribute to the community.
An Incredible Asset
One of our remarkable volunteers, Anita Brown, was on hand at the expo to share her experience as a volunteer and encourage others to get involved. Anita has been with St George Community since 2021 and is an incredible asset to our organisation. Her endless care and dedication make a profound impact on our clients. She assists in managing client enquiries about transportation and community socialisation, providing crucial support for mental well-being. Her kind words and warm demeanour, even during challenging conversations, bring smiles and comfort to those she helps.
Anita faced a personal tragedy last year when she lost her husband, and we feared we might lose her as she moved to Blacktown to be closer to friends. However, her loyalty never wavered, and she remains as steadfast and dedicated as ever. Her compassion is evident in her interactions with clients, many of whom are vulnerable members of the community. Her presence on the phone alone brightens their day, and she has become a source of joy for both clients and colleagues.
Not only does Anita uplift our clients, but she also brings energy and fun into our office, organising bake-offs, mahjong games, and the beloved “corner shop” – her bottom drawer filled with snacks. Her impact is so valued that, in recognition of her ongoing commitment, she even has a St George Community bus named after her called “Brownie”!
Reflecting on her volunteering experience, Anita shared, “Being a volunteer has given me a sense of purpose and joy that I never expected. The connections I’ve made with clients and colleagues are incredibly meaningful, and I love knowing that I can brighten someone’s day just by being there to listen and help.”
For those who missed the expo, but are still curious about volunteering, there are many opportunities available. Whether you are looking to engage with older members of the community, assist with community programs, or lend your skills in an office setting, there is a role suited to everyone’s strengths and interests.
